Hardik Pandya breaks silence on IPL 2024 setback: Won’t run away from a battle

In the world of cricket, few names resonate as strongly as Hardik Pandya’s. Known for his explosive batting, sharp bowling, and charismatic presence on the field, Pandya has carved out a niche for himself in the annals of the sport. However, the IPL 2024 season tested him like never before. Pandya, who made a high-profile return to the Mumbai Indians (MI) as their captain, faced a barrage of criticism from fans and experts alike as the season spiraled into a series of unfortunate events for both him and the franchise.

The Season That Wasn’t

Pandya’s return to MI was anticipated as one of the most significant transfers in IPL history. However, the excitement quickly turned sour. On the day of the announcement, MI lost over 400,000 followers on Twitter, signaling the discontent among fans. The Wankhede Stadium, once a fortress for MI, echoed with boos directed at Pandya, a clear indication of the mounting frustration.

Statistically, Pandya’s performance was far from his best. Scoring only 216 runs at an average of 18 and taking 11 wickets at an economy rate nearing 11 runs per over, he struggled to find his form. His visible frustration and the relentless criticism added to the pressure, making it a season to forget.

Facing the Music

Ahead of India’s T20 World Cup 2024 warm-up game against Bangladesh, Pandya finally opened up about his tumultuous IPL season. Speaking to Star Sports, he emphasized his resolve and determination not to shy away from challenges.

“You have to stay in the battle. Sometimes life puts you in situations where things are tough, but I believe that if you leave the game or the field, the battle that is, you won’t get what you want from your sport, or the results you are looking for,” Pandya said.

A Process-Driven Approach

Despite the hardships, Pandya highlighted the importance of sticking to his processes and routines. He believes in the cyclical nature of life, where good and bad times alternate, and it’s crucial to maintain composure through both.

“These things happen; there are good times and bad times, these are phases that come and go. That is fine. I have gone through these phases many times and I will come out of it as well. I don’t take my successes too seriously. Whatever I have done well, I have forgotten about them immediately and moved forward. Same with difficult times,” he explained.

Resilience and Self-Belief

Pandya’s approach to dealing with adversity is rooted in self-belief and hard work. He remains focused on continuous improvement and faces challenges head-on. His performance in the warm-up game against Bangladesh, where he scored a rapid 40* off 23 balls, showcased his determination to bounce back.

“I think it comes down to self-belief. I believe a lot in hard work. You can succeed only if you put in the effort for it. I want to give myself the opportunity to succeed. I focus simply on how do I keep getting better,” he stated.

Inspiration from the Past

Reflecting on his journey, Pandya draws inspiration from his 16-year-old self, a time when he faced significant challenges but never gave up. This younger version of himself serves as a reminder of the importance of perseverance and dedication.

“Hardik Pandya right now at 30 is a much, much easier job compared to what Hardik Pandya was when I was 16. So I go back to the 16-year-old and I ask him how did you do it, why did you do it? At that point of time, I didn’t have facilities or opportunities. Hard work gave me opportunities and opened doors for me. So I am in that zone right now [where] I am going and asking the 16-year-old – because he is my actual motivator,” he concluded.

Conclusion

Hardik Pandya’s IPL 2024 season might have been a setback, but his response to the adversity highlights his resilience and unwavering spirit. His focus on self-improvement, dedication to hard work, and ability to draw strength from his past experiences make him a role model for aspiring cricketers and fans alike. As Pandya himself said, “this too shall pass,” and with his positive outlook and determination, it’s only a matter of time before he regains his form and silences his critics.
